Can money buy time?

Son: "Daddy, may I ask you a question"

Daddy: "Yeah sure, what it is?"

Son: "Dad, how much do you make an hour"

Daddy: "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?"

Son: "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an
hour?"

Daddy: "I make Rs. 500 an hour"

"Oh", the little boy replied, with his head down.

Looking up, he said, "Dad, may I please borrow Rs. 300?"

The father was furious,
"if the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money
to buy a silly toy or other nonsense, then march yourself to your room
and go to bed.
Think why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this
childish behavior"

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man
sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's
questions.

How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down,
and started to think:

"May be there was something he really needed to buy with that

Rs. 300 and he really didn't ask for money very often!"

The man went to the door of little boy's room and opened the door.
"Are you asleep, son?" He asked.
"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, may be I was too hard on you earlier", said the
man, "It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you.
Here's the Rs.300 you asked for"

The little boy sat straight up, smiling "oh thank you dad!" He yelled.

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled some crippled up notes.
The man, seeing that the boy already had money,
started to get angry
again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his
father.

"Why do you want money if you already had some?" the father grumbled.

"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.

"Daddy I have Rs. 500 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?
Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you"

Challenges and Sharks...

The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the waters close to
Japan have not held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese
population, fishing boats got bigger and went farther than ever. The
farther the fishermen went, the longer it took to bring in the
fish. If the return trip took more than a few days, the fish were
not fresh. The Japanese did not like the taste.

To solve this problem, fishing companies installed freezers on
their boats. They would catch the fish and freeze them at sea.
Freezers allowed the boats to go farther and stay longer. However,
the Japanese could taste the
difference between fresh and frozen and they did not like frozen
fish. The frozen fish brought a lower price. So fishing companies
installed fish tanks. They would catch the fish and stuff them in
the tanks, fin to fin.
After a little thrashing around, the fish stopped moving. They were
tired and dull, but alive. Unfortunately, the Japanese could still
taste the difference. Because the fish did not move for days, they
lost their fresh-fish taste.

The Japanese preferred the lively taste of fresh fish, not sluggish
fish. So how did Japanese fishing companies solve this problem? How
do they get fresh-tasting fish to Japan? To keep the fish tasting
fresh, the Japanese fishing companies (still) put the fish in the tanks.

But now they add a small shark to each tank. The shark eats a few fish,

but most of the fish arrive in a very lively state.

Like the Japanese fish - "Man thrives, oddly enough, only in the
presence of a challenging environment ."- L. Ron Hubbard. Challenges
are what keep us FRESH! Instead of avoiding challenges, jump into
them. Beat the heck out of them. Enjoy the game.
If your challenges are too large or too numerous, reorganize

the challenge, team up, be resourceful and do not give up.

Failing makes you tired.
If you have met your goals, set some bigger goals.
Once you meet your personal or family needs, move onto goals for
your group, the society, even mankind.

Don't create success and lie in it. You have

resources, skills and abilities to make a

difference. Put a shark in your tank and see
how far you can really go!

Why I fired my graduate!!

Last week was my birthday and I didn't feel very well waking up on
that morning.
I went downstairs for breakfast, hoping my wife would be pleasant
and say, "Happy Birthday!", and possibly have a small present for me.
As it turned out, she barely said good morning, let alone "Happy
Birthday."
I thought... Well, that's marriage for you, but the kids....They
will remember.
My kids came bounding down stairs to breakfast and didn't say a word.
So when I left for the office, I felt pretty low and somewhat
despondent.
As I walked into my office, my graduate, Jane said, "Good Morning
Boss, and by the way Happy Birthday! "
It felt a little better that at least someone had remembered.
I worked until one o'clock, when Jane knocked on my door and said,
"You know, It's such a beautiful day outside, and it is your Birthday,
what do you say we go out to lunch, just you and me."
I said, "Thanks, Jane, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day.
Let's go!"
We went to lunch. but we didn't go where we normally would go. She
chose instead a quiet bistro with a private table. We had two martinis
each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously.
On the way back to the office, Jane said, "You know, It's such a
beautiful day... We don't need to go straight back to the office,
Do We?"
I responded, "I guess not. What do you have in mind?"
She said, "Let's drop by my apartment, it's just around the corner."
After arriving at her apartment, Jane turned to me and said, "
Boss,if you don't mind, I'm going to step into the bedroom for just a moment.
I'll be right back." "Ok," I nervously replied.
She went into the bedroom and, after a couple of minutes, she came
out carrying a huge birthday cake. followed by my wife, my kids, and
dozens of my friends and co-workers, all singing "Happy Birthday. "
And I just sat there...
On the couch...
Naked.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that

The first 2 weeks have just flown past so quickly!! Well, 10 days are almost equal to 14...

Here are some pics, I want you to see...

These are snaps of my home in India...Decked up for my brother's marriage...Total cost for 5 nights - HK$440. Wow!
That's me sitting with my parents at the BP airport.
That's Rik making a model out of Ken.

The noodles buffet lunch at Marriott's was too much for me to eat...I could barely finish a bowl...Bosco and Gary went for 3 or more!! Bank of China sure did target the pink dollar...poorly...with their Christmas deco...Even Santa Claus is a Hong Konger...Look how he does the "V". That's my brother...knocked out after a long flight..

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

The last few days of last year were such a toil...and rushed! Everyday had its own challenges and deadlines and I had to hold on to the arms of time and delay their drag until I finished...Dec 15 had 2 parties. One was a Children's Christmas Party where I had to stand in as a photographer...officially. The magician was quite moody! I realized that his English is poor and he is actually famous on TV shows. :-) Once he got going it was quite good....but it required a nightmarish effort to click the tiny tots and their parents as they moved around in party mood. I even have a shot of Rudolf (not the red-nosed reindeer) on a table - trying to get a better snap. After that party, I had to rush to TRU. It was the venue for our dept holiday party. A whopping 150 people had to be accommodated into that small area that could sit around 75. Thanks to the pre-party venue visit, we had everything under control. Except a few couches and tables the floor and balcony had been cleared out. There was enough standing space and the DJ got the music growing. The mantra was that this was a party and not a Christmas dinner. And it worked! People loved it...especially with an open bar. The food was ok too. But the music was not up to mark and some old 80's songs were played! And I had to initiate the dance floor activities...as usual the prize draw got everybody hooting. and usual I failed to get one :-)
Anyways, Rik got very drunk and had to be escorted home by Shers. :-P
The next day I flew out to Delhi. I met my brother there at the IG International Airport. The transfer to domestic terminal was messy, chaotic and shocking as usual. Surprisingly, Delhi didn’t seem so cold and one sweater sufficed.
He was all excited about getting married and both of us were bloody exhausted…I was already into my second day without sleep when the plane touched down at BP airport (BBSR)…Our parents and his in-laws were there to receive us!!
The wedding needs to be covered with enough pics. Unfortunately I have not received them all yet. So you have to wait until I do. So watch out for my next article on – The Great Oriya Wedding ;-)
After the wedding was over I took a flight out to Delhi again on the way back. I was received and taken good care off by the sailor’s home staff as promised by Dad. I was having a horrible time from a very upset stomach that had not been able to digest the oily biriyani lunch on the day before.
I went shopping for handicrafts and books later in the evening. It was getting quite cold and I spent a good part of the night in bed under a blanket.
I woke at 3.30am and left the place at 4.00am. It was a short ride to the airport but my hands had almost frozen by then. Check-in was a breeze and I was busy checking email. Thank God, I did it there…cannot access Yahoo mail from HK yet.
I did some duty-free shopping and then boarded the flight for HK.
Touchdown was smooth and so was the home-coming. God, I missed HK so much during this time…after a hectic day at TY home I went out for New Year celebrations. As usual the streets around LKF were packed and we were walking around the area when the clock struck. Had a troublesome time back at home…and had to induce vomiting to be able to lie down and sleep…I have a renewed New Year resolution…I won’t tell you…

The 3 books I have bought on this trip are –

  • Robert Ludlum’s – The Scorpio Illusion
  • Robert Ludlum’s – The Bancroft Strategy (reading this one now and it looks good)
  • Stephen R. Covey – The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (recommended by my boss).

I did not buy THE 8th Habit since I want to finish the 7 preceding ones first. ;-)

More reviews of books to follow soon...

I have watched the following movies recently -

  • Omkara - **** (Brilliant. The best movie I have watched recently. Saif is the best!)
  • Dhoom 2 - **** (Good with the stunts and looks)
  • Bas Ek Pal - * (Yucky)
  • Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna - *** (Too long. The third star was for the looks)
  • Lage Raho Munna Bhai - ***** (This one will fight for the OSCARS)
  • Anthony Kaun Hai - **** (for the laughs)
  • Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota - * (Forgetful movie though the concept is quite good)
  • Corporate - *** (Quite interesting though you begin to hate some characters towards the end)
  • DON - **** (SRK deserves his own stars. This version is better than the original version)
  • Golmaal - * (Yucky)
  • Dosti - * (Yucky)
  • Darwaza Bandh Rakho - ** (good concept but too crowded. Not another Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron)
  • Krrish - *** (for the tech)

I have bought the following music CDs recently from Planet M @ Big Bazaar -

  • Don
  • Dhoom 2
  • Salaam-e-Ishq
  • Guru
  • Bollywood MP3 hits
  • Fanaa

I have switched over to the new blogger and will be using my google account from now on...hope this one is better...I am still testing it out. My experience with the beta version was not that great....so lets hope Google delivers like always :-)

Thing to note - even though I had given in to full-time gluttony over the past 2 weeks, I have not gained even an ounce. Wow!! Well done - To me :-)) hehehe
